NBA Rumors: San Antonio Spurs are Stuck with DeMar DeRozan, Trade Deal Impossible due to Player Option

DeMar DeRozan was given to the San Antonio Spurs in return when Kawhi Leonard was traded out to the Toronto Raptors before the last NBA season. While DeRozan was able to lead the Spurs into the playoffs, Leonard helped the Raptors in winning their first NBA title.

Here we are in the NBA 2019-20 season, Kawhi Leonard is playing for Clippers who are one of the top contenders, whereas DeMar DeRozan couldn’t keep the Spurs in the playoff race. It is why the Spurs are exploring the trade market for DeRozan but the problem is that he has a player option after this season and his contract salary is too much. It is why the Spurs could be stuck with DeMar DeRozan and may have to offer him a long term contract.

DeMar DeRozan has a player option for $27.7 million next season where he can become a free agent and walk away from any of the NBA teams. It is tough for the Spurs to find serious takers for a guy who can skip town in just a few months.

The Spurs are exploring the trade market for DeRozan but he will become a free agent soon, which makes it very difficult to find a trade deal for him. DeRozan can only be brought by a team that has a dire need for additional star power for winning the NBA 2019-20 title. However, there are a lot of players that fits the bill and would cost way less without the future risk.

DeRozan is still an efficient player who can prove useful to the San Antonio Spurs in future NBA seasons. He can knock down shots from beyond the arc and can also handle the offensive side of the floor. The 30-year-old shooting guard has an average of 22.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 53.4 percent shooting from the field.

DeMar DeRozan will most likely exercise his player option in the summer free agency and hence there is no point in trading him right now. The Spurs should negotiate a contract extension with DeRozan that would help them in title contention for NBA 2020-21 season.
